What compression actually buys
Vacuum compression takes air out of clothing, and the saving is proportional to how much air was in it. A puffer jacket, a fleece, a towel and a jumper are mostly trapped air, and the manufacturer rates the saving on bulky clothing at more than 50 percent. Jeans, books and shoes are close to solid, and sealing them achieves nothing. That single distinction is the difference between a compression bag that changes a trip and one that sits unused after the first flight.
It also compresses volume and not weight. A carrier weighing hand luggage reads the same figure before and after, so compression solves a sizer problem, never a scale problem.
The four things that decide it
A separate sealed compartment. Compression that happens in the main space presses against everything else in the bag, including a laptop. A compartment of its own keeps the compressed block where it belongs.
A check valve, not a zip seal. The valve is what holds the vacuum once the pumping stops. It is also the part that fails, and it fails the same way every time: closed on a fold of fabric, so the seal leaks and the bag is back to full volume by the next morning.
A manual pump. Nothing about a bag should need charging. A hand pump works in a hotel room with no socket and cannot run flat halfway through.
A shape that matches an allowance. Compression is only useful if the bag it is in clears the box being measured. A compression bag two centimetres too long for the sizer is a compression bag that gets gate-checked.
